LRGS (Long term Research Grant Scheme) Stock Enhancement, Sustainable Production and Culture of Wild Patin Buah (Pangasius nasutus) for Improvement of Fishermen Livelihood and Aquaculture Industry in Malaysia

This research is based in Universiti Putra Malaysia and led by Prof. Dr. Aziz Arshad as the program leader. It is also a research collaboration between two main local universities; Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). The research is funded by Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (KPT) from 2019 to 2022. The main objective is to study the various aspects of Pangasius nasutus or Patin fruit culture. There are five sub-projects under this grant; each with different objectives.

 

Patin Buah, Pangasius nasutus

Project 1: Selective breeding for high quality seed productions and establishment of larval and juvenile culture techniques of Pangasius nasutus

Project 2: Feed and health management of Pangasius nasutus through immunoprophylactic and probiotics approach

Project 3: Detection of spawning and nursery grounds and ecological modelling of Pangasius nasutus for conservation and management policy

Project 4: Restocking and monitoring of Pangasius nasutus population for enhancement of natural stock and its reproductive capacity

Project 5: Economic valuation, Vulnerability and Sustainable Livelihood of Patin Buah (P. nasutus) fishermen
