Marikultur
Mariculture is known as the rearing of marine plants and animals. It is a specialized branch of aquaculture involving the cultivation of marine organisms for food and other products in open or closed seas/oceans, tanks, ponds or raceways. Among popular species used in mariculture are seaweeds, molluscs, crustaceans and fish. There are more advantages on using mariculture with modern approaches compared to conventional culture techniques which are highly dependent on chemicals. The production of fish in mariculture systems is easier to maintain since it is run in a controlled environment. Moreover, harvesting is more efficient due to consistent quality and lower cost which leads to higher profit.
This field has high demand from the community as it provides a huge added value to the aquaculture sector. This area emphasizes on the techniques of seeding marine organisms especially for high value species, marine plant culture, nursing of marine organisms, latest technologies in livestock farming and sustainable production approaches. In addition, the concept of biosecurity and current issues in this field such as the use of banned chemicals and antibiotics as well as other issues are also highlighted.
