The ability of Chlorella species to produce metabolites that possess various health-promoting activities such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, and antiviral activities make them popular in pharmaceuticals and health industries across many Asian countries such as China, Korea, and Japan for hundreds of years. In an attempt to induce the formation of higher metabolite production such as pigment and lipid production, manipulation of carbon source and light intensity were commonly used. Thus a study was conducted to explore the effect of moderate light intensity supplemented with 2% glucose under nutrient-limited condition on C. sorokiniana. Finding shown that these treatments contributed to overproduction of high-value metabolites such as carotenoids especially lutein, unsaturated fatty acids synthesis and triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation. In addition, upregulation of genes involved in lutein biosynthesis for carotenoids production, fatty acid biosynthesis, TAG accumulation, and the majority of the carbon fixation pathways was observed.
