SATREPS-OTEC PROJECT (2019-2024)

Development of Advanced Hybrid Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) Technology for Low Carbon Society and Sustainable Energy System: First Experimental OTEC Plant of Malaysia`’

International Institute of Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences (I-AQUAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), joins Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Saga University, Japan in Malaysia-Japan collaborative research under the “Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS)” promoted by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) to carry out a project entitled “Development of Advanced Hybrid Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) Technology for Low Carbon Society and Sustainable Energy System: First Experimental OTEC Plant of Malaysia”.

Led by Prof. Dato’ Ir. Dr. Abu Bakar Jaafar from UTM and Prof. Dr. Yasuyuki Ikegami from Saga University, the project will implement the novel Hybrid OTEC (H-OTEC) and explore multi-purpose utilization of deep seawater, so called the ”Malaysia Model”. The H-OTEC test rig, the supply of required utilities and seawater intake facility will be established in I-AQUAS, UPM, Port-Dickson.

Other Universities in Malaysia involved in SATREPS-OTEC are University of Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), whilst the Institute of Ocean Energy Saga University, Tokyo University, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and Xenesys Co. Ltd. are also our partners from Japan. Approximately, 50 Malaysian scientists and 20 Japanese scientists are involved in this project. Two of the ten projects will be carried out on Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences, i.e. 1. Utilization of H-OTEC Produced Water for the Cultivation of High Value Commercial Fish and Invertebrate Species (led by Prof. Dr. Aziz Arshad); and 2. Assessment of Spatial and Seasonal Variations of Water Quality for use in Advanced Hybrid OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) Technology and Applications of its Waste Water for Aquaculture Live-feed Production (led by Prof. Dr. Fatimah Md. Yusoff).

UTM-UPM SATREPS H-OTEC Lab & Test Rig – to be completed and used by early of 2021
