Chlorella sp. has various functional properties for biological and food applications.  These microalgae have considerable amounts of phenolics, which are comparable to other plant sources. Phenolic compounds are the major contributors to antioxidant capacities. Thus, Chlorella sp. microalgae may have important and broad applications in the pharmaceutical and food industries. Recently, subcritical water (SW) extraction has become an increasingly popular alternative technology for the extraction of natural bioactive compounds from natural sources. By keeping water liquid temperatures between 100 ËšC and 374 ËšC, and pressures below the critical pressure of 22 MPa during extraction, it helps to lower extraction time, simplicity, lower operational cost, higher extract quality, and excellent environmental credentials. Therefore, SW technology was used to maximize the recovery of Chlorella sp. phenolic content and thus contribute to their antioxidant activity. The results in this study indicate that Chlorella sp. is a desirable source of phenolic compounds possessing strong antioxidant activity. Furthermore, SW technology is a suitable and environmentally friendly process that could enhance the extraction of phenolic content from this microalga and can replace the usage of organic solvents in the extraction of phenolic compounds.
