Academic Visit of UPM Veterinary Students to I-AQUAS

PORT DICKSON, 3 December 2025 – An academic visit to the International Institute of Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences (I-AQUAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Port Dickson was conducted as part of the teaching and learning activities for the Clinical Practice and Veterinary Diagnosis course for Year Five students of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programme. The visit aimed to provide students with direct exposure to the operations and management of modern aquaculture facilities, as well as practical applications in aquatic animal health and diagnosis.

A total of nine Year Five students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UPM participated in the visit, accompanied by four supervising officers. The accompanying officers were responsible for ensuring compliance with all safety procedures, facility regulations and best practices throughout the visit. The programme was held from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon and fully utilised the facilities available at I-AQUAS Port Dickson.

Throughout the visit, the students took part in briefing sessions, demonstrations and field observations, which included visits to aquaculture systems, water quality laboratories and fish farming areas. Special emphasis was placed on aquaculture management, water quality control, fish health and the implementation of biosecurity protocols to prevent disease outbreaks within aquaculture systems.

This academic visit provided students with the opportunity to bridge theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom with real-world practices in the field. The exposure is expected to enhance their understanding, clinical skills and level of preparedness in facing professional challenges as future veterinary practitioners, particularly in the areas of aquatic animal health and the aquaculture industry.
