Future of Biodiversity Collections in Malaysia

Malaysia as part of the Sundaland Biodiversity Hotspot, is one of the Conference of Parties (COP) countries which has signed the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 1992, committed to the conservation, sustainable use and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of biodiversity. However, thirty years after the Convention was agreed upon, species loss was still occurring faster that it had been due to poor implementation and accelerated by climate change impacts.

In 1998, the Government of Malaysia formulated a National Biological Diversity Policy (NPBD) with the vision “To transform Malaysia into a world centre of excellence in conservation, research and utilization of tropical biodiversity by the year 2020”. The policy includes 15 strategies for effective management of biodiversity, which the first strategy was to “Improve the Scientific Knowledge of Biodiversity”. Establishing a natural history collection is the most important base to build on biodiversity knowledge, thus, identifying the current availability of biodiversity collection, is the first step to prospect a Future of Biodiversity Collections in Malaysia.

This upcoming event Future of Biodiversity Collections in Malaysia will be a great platform for scientists, policy makers, collectors, researchers, and all biodiversity/taxonomy enthusiasts to share and to form a strong network working towards a better future for the Malaysian biodiversity research. Invited and contributed presentations by speakers and participants will be held on the first day (28 February 2023), while the workshop on the 1-2 March 2023 where discussions and brainstorming sessions will be held and moderated by Prof. Dr. Julia D. Sigwart, an Evolutionary Biologist from the Senckenberg Research Institute, Frankfurt, Germany.
