14 Dec 2022: Technical visit and discussion from DOF Pahang team with researchers/lecturers at the International Institute of Aquaculture & Aquatic Science (I-AQUAS) of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Port Dickson. This technical visit were attended by Mr. Abdullah bin Jaafar, Pahang State Fisheries Director; Head of Kuantan Fisheries Biosecurity Center, Head of Bukit Tinggi Aquaculture Development Center, Head of Fisheries Biosecurity Branch, Pahang DOF officials, Pahang businessman Dato' Mohd Azmi bin Mohd Amin and Mr. Muhamad Shukri bin Shafie from Serandu Aquaponics System Sdn. Bhd. (SAS). From I-AQUAS, were attended by Prof. Dr. Ahmad Zaharin (Director), Prof. Dr. Abdul Aziz Arshad, Associate Prof. Dr. Murni Karim, Associate Prof. Dr. Ahmad Fikri and the I-AQUAS officers.

The visit took place at the I-AQUAS hatcheries: farming of various live foods/algae, crabs, lobsters, latok (sea grapes) etc. Further discussion was on to develop a MOU between the agencies so to collaborate in more research work focusing the inland/river fisheries aquaculture:

• helping research to breed and produce seeds of high value fish species of Patin Buah (Pangasius nasutus);
• assist research in the detection of life cycle patterns, habitats etc. for Patin Buah fish in Sungai Pahang;
• helping farmers/entrepreneurs in fish farming, latut (sea grapes) & white shrimp;
• help increase the use of IOT in super-intensive livestock systems;
• help fish nutrition research (such as from palm oil sources etc.)
• sharing information.

In addition, the SAS and I-AQUAS entrepreneurs agreed to accept/hold visits to hatcheries and the super-intensive 'HDPE plastic lining' breeding pond farms for White Shrimp in Pekan and Kuantan. Additional to that, an initial agreement was reached to develop an MOU to start cooperation in breeding ketam renjung experiments, increasing Latok farming and the use of IOT.

For White Shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) breeding, DOF Pahang feels very confident that the farming system by Serandu Aquaponics System Sdn Bhd. (SAS) includes the chain of seed production/nursing - hatcheries, nurseries, super-intensive breeding ponds 'HDPE plastic lining' in Pekan and Kuantan will become a model that will be developed for breeding efforts in other places including outside the State of Pahang, in accordance with the Securities Policy Food.
