Marine Aquatic Plants

By: Dr Farah Izana Abdullah

Marine aquatic plants refer to plants that grow and thrive in seawater or saline environments. These plants have adapted to survive and thrive in marine environments with high salinity levels. Some examples of marine aquatic plants include:

  1. Seagrasses: Seagrasses are a group of plants that grow on the seabed. They have roots, stems, and leaves like terrestrial plants, but they live in seawater. Examples include seagrasses like eelgrass, zostera, and manatee grass.

  1. Algae: Marine algae are photosynthetic organisms found in marine waters. They can range from microscopic microalgae to larger macroalgae. Some examples of marine algae include kelp, green algae, red algae, and brown algae.

  1. Marine Hydrophytes: Some hydrophytic plants that can grow in freshwater can also be found in saline environments, such as mangroves and similar species. Mangroves, like the mangrove tree, have aerial roots that protrude upward to obtain oxygen from the air.

  1. Seaweeds: Seaweeds are a type of marine algae that grows in shallow marine waters. They can attach to substrates or float on the water's surface. Common types of seaweeds include Ulva (green seaweed), Fucus (brown seaweed), and Gracilaria (red seaweed).

  1. Mangrove Plants: Mangroves are a group of plants that grow in coastal areas with saline water. They have aerial roots that protrude upward to obtain oxygen from the air. Some types of mangroves include Rhizophora, Avicennia, and Ceriops.

Marine aquatic plants play a crucial role in marine ecosystems, providing habitats for various species, filtering water, and storing carbon. Additionally, some of these plants also offer economic benefits, such as a source of food and natural chemicals.
