14May. Benthic Intertidal and Coastal Ecosystem Fieldwork Program exposes students to the richness of the ocean in Port Dickson

I-AQUAS, UPM Port Dickson Campus, May 14, 2023 - On May 13 and 14, 2023, the Biology Department, Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) conducted the Benthic Intertidal and Coastal Ecosystem Fieldwork Program for the subject of BGY4044, Limnology and Oceanography. The two-day program witnessed the presence of 19 participants, comprising of 16 students and 3 assistants, who were eager to explore the diversity of life in coastal and benthic intertidal ecosystems.

The main activities of the program included the sampling and identification of seawater and plankton samples in the coastal waters in front of I-AQUAS and the collection of intertidal benthic life samples in the waters of Blue Lagoon Beach, Port Dickson. Participants were taught proper sampling techniques and identification skills to identify plankton and benthic life species found in the area.

The lecturer at the Department of Biology, UPM, said, "This program gives students the opportunity to engage in real fieldwork and learn about the diversity of life in intertidal coastal and benthic ecosystems. They can see for themselves the different species of plankton and benthic life present in these waters and understand the important role that these ecosystems play in marine sustainability."

The program also gave participants valuable experience in managing sampling and making field analyses. They learned about methods of storing and preserving samples for future research use. These activities helped improve their practical skills and broaden their understanding of marine science and limnology.

The Beach and Intertidal Benthic Ecosystem Fieldwork Program is considered a significant step in strengthening student interest in limnology and oceanography. It is hoped that such programs will continue in the future to involve more students and contribute more to our understanding of marine ecosystems and their sustainability.
