FEB: Seaweed Cultivation Activity with the Community in Omadal Island by I-AQUAS and UPM Faculty of Agriculture Researchers

26 - 30 January 2024, Omadal Island, Sabah - A seaweed cultivation program was conducted on Omadal Island, Sabah, by researchers from the International Institute of Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences (I-AQUAS) and the Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The researchers involved were Prof Dr. Muta Harah Zakaria from the Faculty of Agriculture and Mr. Mohd Fakhrulddin Ismail, Dr. Illisriyani Ismail, and Dr. Nur Leena Wong Wai Sin from I-AQUAS.

The program began with an activity of explaining and introducing the seaweed culture system to the Omadal Island community. The main purpose of this program is to introduce seaweed cultivation techniques to the local community as an effort to advance the aquaculture industry in the area.

This program has received a very positive response from the villagers. They showed high interest and enthusiasm to learn about new techniques in seaweed cultivation.

We hope this program will help in enhancing the knowledge and skills of the local community in seaweed cultivation, and subsequently assist in advancing the aquaculture industry on Omadal Island.
