PORT DICKSON, 9th November 2024 – Congratulations to the I-AQUAS Researcher on the receipt of the Translational Grant from the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), led by YBhg. Professor Dr. Ahmad Zaharin Aris and the team of researchers with dynamic expertise contributing to the study "Empowering Social Transformation through Aquaculture: High-Value Blue Swimming Crab Seed Program for the Sungai Rambai Community, Melaka." The study will span two (2) years, starting from November 9, 2023, to November 8, 2025.
The project aims to enhance the economic and social well-being of the Sungai Rambai fishing community by increasing the landing of blue swimming crab. The core of this initiative is the integration of sustainable marine practices with community economic growth, with a specific focus on the sustainability of crab species. The programme includes comprehensive training in crab stock improvement programmes and essential non-technical skills such as innovation, tailored to enhance the overall community's capabilities. By aligning conservation efforts with economic incentives, it not only protects marine ecosystems but also ensures the long-term well-being and prosperity of the fishing community. This initiative represents a balanced approach to environmental conservation and community empowerment, setting a precedent for similar initiatives globally.
This research allows the university to engage in research and development pertaining to aquaculture and marine science, with a specific focus on the breeding, conservation, and management of blue swimming crabs. This not only elevates the university's standing and impact in this domain but also provides the opportunity to cultivate partnerships and positive connections with fishing communities, fisheries departments, local authorities, and other relevant stakeholders. Through these collaborations, avenues for sharing knowledge, resources, facilities, and support to implement the blue swimming crab stock enhancement program can be facilitated.
Lastly, and most importantly, the university can contribute to the socio-economic and environmental development of the fishing community and the surrounding area. The following is the list of Researchers involved in this study:
I-AQUAS once again congratulates the Researchers involved and wishes them success.
