PHYTOPLANKTON & ZOOPLANKTON IDENTIFICATION TRAINING

Research highlight
Dr. Hazel Monica M. Peralta is an Associate Professor at the Central Luzon State University, Central Luzon Island, Philippines. Since the start of her career, she has been focused on aquatic ecology specifically on plankton diversity, both in freshwater and marine environments. Her works on the plankton ecology started in paddy ecosystems under the Integrated Rice-Fish System project which started in the early 1990’s. Her research was later extended to plankton of brackishwater-marine pond ecosystems when she started working in UPM late 1990’s. Throughout the nearly 30 years of here scientific career, over 90% of her research and publications directly involved plankton (phytoplankton/microalgae and zooplankton) biology and ecology in different aquatic habitats both freshwater (including lakes, rivers and temporary waters) and marine (coastal zone ecosystems). Among her most cited publications include “Phytoplankton succession in intensive marine shrimp culture ponds”, “Bioactive Compounds from Green Microalgae”, and “Use of Microalgae as Bioremediation Agent in Wastewater”. Currently, her research focused on “green water technology for aquaculture” and the “role of marine water plankton on the survival and growth performance of Milkfish, Chanos chanos.
