I-AQUAS: High-Quality Giant Freshwater Prawn Seed Production
At I-AQUAS, the giant freshwater prawn breeding process is carried out intensively to ensure the production of high-quality seeds, which not only supports the aquaculture industry but also contributes to conservation efforts. Mature prawns are released into their natural habitat as part of a release initiative aimed at strengthening the wild population of giant freshwater prawns.
The primary objective of this program is to conserve the sustainability of the giant freshwater prawn species while positively impacting aquatic ecosystems and the local fisheries sector. We also play an important role in supplying high-quality giant freshwater prawn seeds to local ponds, helping aquaculture entrepreneurs improve their yields and product quality.
A Bright Future for Malaysia's Aquaculture Industry
With the rising issue of low-quality giant freshwater prawns in the market, I-AQUAS is committed to ensuring consistent and high-quality seed production. Our vision is to become a primary reference center in the national aquaculture industry, practicing the best standards in every phase of breeding.
Increase in Production by 2025: Results of Strategic Cooperation
By 2025, I-AQUAS anticipates a significant increase in the production of giant freshwater prawn seeds—between 500,000 and 1,000,000 seeds. This increase is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF) and UPM during MAHA 2024 under the Food Security Program.
These giant freshwater prawn seeds will be widely released into rivers throughout Peninsular Malaysia as part of conservation efforts to enhance the wild population of giant freshwater prawns. This initiative will also contribute to the restoration of natural aquatic ecosystems and preserve our river biodiversity.
Benefits for Local Communities and the Nation
This initiative not only preserves the environment but also provides significant benefits to local communities that depend on fishery resources. With the production of high-quality seeds, this cooperation is expected to enhance the supply of seeds for the local market, strengthen the competitiveness of Malaysia's aquaculture industry, and contribute to national food security.
Through this initiative, I-AQUAS and our strategic partners aim to continue leading the way in strengthening a sustainable aquaculture sector that benefits both the environment and society.
