International research collaboration between Kindai University and Universiti Putra Malaysia on the use of fruit wastes for fish feeds funded by the JSPS Kakenhi Grant (2018-2019) and the Toyo Suisan Foundation Research Grant (2019-2020) evaluated nutritional values and economic benefits of the application of various fruit wastes in the formulated diets of Malaysian mahseer (Tor tambroides). Fruit wastes and by-products are promising sources of valuable compounds which include antimicrobials, antioxidants, phytochemicals (flavonoids, carotenoids, and phenolics) and essential vitamins that contain nutritional properties and multiple biological functions. Studies showed that fruits wastes from coconut, pineapple, and jackfruit are useful to improve fish meat quality and taste, blood biochemistry, liver and intestine, and immunity in tilapia and Malaysian mahseer.
