Stock Enhancement, Sustainable Production And Culture Of Wild Patin Buah (Pangasius nasutus) For Improvement Of Fishermen Livelihood And Aquaculture Industry In Malaysia

Funding Agency : Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MoE)

The long term grant (LRGS) is the Ministry of Higher Education initiative to support research activities in the institutions of higher learning in Malaysia, with the objective to generate novel ideas and knowledge in strategic niche areas. In relation to I-AQUAS, LRGS provides opportunities to carry out research projects that have significant impacts on the Malaysian aquaculture industry. A research project entitled Stock Enhancement, Sustainable Production and Culture of Wild Patin fruit (Pangasius nasutus) for Improvement òf Fishermen Livelihood and Aquaculture Industry in Malaysia`’ led Prof.Dr. Aziz Arshad has successfully secured a LRGS research grant RM 4.29 million.

The main objective of this study is to increase the production of  ikan patin buah in Pahang river, Malaysia. Patin buah is an important river fish in Malaysia with a high demand in the local market. However, the fisheries for this fish species has decreased to a low level starting from 2017 years due to overfishing. As such, the LRGS project specifically aims to develop breeding techniques, nutritional formulations, health protocols and management, conservation measure strategies and assist local fishers in the management of the ikan patin`buah. This research is carefully planned to achieve sustainable production of ‘patin buah without affecting its natural stocks and environment.
