Muar Oyster Breeding

MUAR – The Muar River is no longer just a historical waterway; it has become a global focal point for aquaculture following a major breakthrough by researchers from the International Institute of Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences (I-AQUAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The species locally known as the White Oyster has been officially recognized as Crassostrea saidii—a unique species found nowhere else in the world.

Breeding Success: Securing a Global Heritage
Facing declining populations due to development and pollution, the i-AQUAS team, led by Dr. Nur Leena Wong, embarked on a critical mission: producing white oyster seeds within a controlled laboratory environment.
This success represents a massive leap for the industry because:
  • Controlled Hatchery Technology: Researchers successfully developed breeding protocols that allow for sustainable seed production, moving away from the unpredictability of wild harvesting.
  • Deep Biological Research: The study covered reproductive cycles, water quality, and specific salinity levels (between 8 to 25 PPT) to ensure the survival and growth of the produced seeds.
  • Knowledge Transfer: I-AQUAS is now prepared to transfer this technology and expertise to industry players and government agencies to develop the white oyster sector commercially.

What Makes the Muar White Oyster Special?
This oyster is regarded as one of the top 10 seafood delicacies in the world due to its creamy white flesh and premium quality.

Impact on the Community
The success of this hatchery breeding provides a new lease on life for the traditional oyster farming community in Muar, which has practiced "oyster diving" since 1858. With a consistent supply of seeds, this industry can be preserved as a heritage craft while evolving into a high-value economic source for local residents.
